For juvenile moose, Momma's boys and girls fare best

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Based on ten years of fieldwork in the Tetons of Wyoming, WCS Conservation Biologist, University of Montana Professor and study author Dr. Joel Berger looked at whether body size of juvenile moose and maternal presence were related to survival of the young animals. In animals from elk to lizards and fish, size matters, and larger individuals enjoy a survival advantage. However, results of Berger?s study showed that for juvenile moose, body mass had no significant effect on overwinter survival. Maternal presence did.

The study appears in the early view section of the on-line edition of the journal Conservation Biology.

The study found that orphaned moose in their first winter were subjected to 8 to 47 times more aggression from adult moose than were young moose whose mothers were present. Overall, the survival of orphan calves was about 8 times lower than those with mothers.

Along with facing more aggression from kicking by adult females and being displaced from the best feeding areas, Berger theorized that orphans incur greater metabolic costs and expend more energy in deep snow. Why orphans were attacked more was not clear, but Berger raised the possibility that mothers were trying to maintain more resources for their own offspring.

?These findings highlight the importance of maternal presence rather than body size and suggest policy changes may be warranted in how harvest quotas are set,? said Berger. ?In some circumstances, the shooting of mothers with young has been permitted under the assumption that calf survival is minimally affected. Clearly, that is not the case.?

In another development from the study, Berger pioneered a new method to estimate the size of juveniles without resorting to immobilization by darting or netting by helicopters ? both methods that are stressful to wildlife. Instead, Berger used photogrammetry?a process of using photographs to determine the properties of objects. Digitally measuring head sizes on photographs enabled estimation of juvenile body mass in a quick and non-invasive fashion.

Berger said, ?Other methods of acquiring data on large animals are exhaustive, expensive and more invasive. Photogrammetric assessment has shown to be accurate, widely deployable and much easier on the animals and scientists, and the findings in this study illustrate the method can be used to inform conservation planning.?

The best of the worst fiction books - Stuff.co.nz

It takes a love of words and multiple attempts to write the opening paragraph of the world's worst novel, as Wellington man Leslie Craven has discovered.

Craven has been named a winner of the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, which challenges entrants to write the first sentence

Last week, from thousands of entries from around the world, Mr Craven was singled out as the best of the historical fiction category with this gem:

The "clunk" of the guillotine blade's release reminded Marie Antoinette, quite briefly, of the sound of the wooden leg of her favourite manservant as he not-quite-silently crossed the polished floors of Versailles to bring her another tray of petit fours.

Craven said he came across the contest a couple of years ago and thought he would have a go this year. He had always ''kind of liked words'' and was inspired to submit six entries.

''The one that should have won, did. There is no prize, the only prize is the glory. I can't say it was like winning Lotto because I haven't done that yet but it did feel really good.''

He said those close to him were excited by the win but he had no desire to expand the paragraph to a full novel.

''My wife was delighted. She is very proud of me and has been emailing everyone right, left and centre to tell them. My mother in Blenheim was quite intrigued. The network is happy.''

The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest has been sponsored by the English Department at San Jose State University since 1982. In its second year it had more than 10,000 entries and still attracts thousands more each year.

Nutrition and Fitness Tips from First Lady of the United States ...

It?s no secret, Whitney and I admire our current ?First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama. She is one of our role models and inspirations as we both admire her style, speaking , education and much more. Regardless of your political stands (if you have any), you can?t say First Lady Michelle Obama isn?t also a beacon for health and fitness.

I read a great article on some of her fitness and nutrition tips for herself and her family. Check out my summary of FLOTUS Michelle Obama?s fitness and nutrient tips.

?

?

Fitness Tips from First Lady of the United States ? Michelle Obama

  • Morning Workouts ? She workouts out at 4:30am or 5am.
  • Couple Time ? President Obama joins in on the workouts an half hour or hour later than she does. While working out they watch Sports Center and catch up on all that is going on.(Cute! Her workout partner is her husband too!)
  • Travel Fitness ? She will jump rope or do burst training when traveling.

?

Nutrition Tips from First Lady of the United States ? Michelle Obama

  • Junk Food Alternatives ? She has healthy alternatives for those food weakness for herself and family.
  • Juice Lovers - She recommends substituting water for juice. If you can?t cut juice, a great alternative is to mix juice with seltzer.
  • Nuts and Chips Lover ? Eat sparingly and slowly. President Obama shakes them in one hand and creates, like, a little dispenser with his index finger where he can just pop them in his mouth.
  • French Fry Lover ? Don?t bring them in the house. It?s much easier to say no when they are not in arms length.

Rosie's Heart Scare Highlights Risk

A heart-attack surviving cardiologist says that comedian Rosie O'Donnell is lucky to be alive today, after she delayed seeking help for an impending heart attack, ignoring flu-like symptoms before seeing a doctor.

O'Donnell reported that she had suffered what her doctors called the "widow maker," a 99 percent blockage of the left descending artery that feeds the heart.

"The first thing we women do is become stupid," said Dr. Kathleen McNicholas, a former heart surgeon and medical director of performance improvement at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Del. "She could have died. Sudden death in women is a reasonable presentation."

The former talk-show host, 50, wrote on "Rosie Blog," that last week she had helped an "enormous" woman out of a car: "A few hours later my body hurt, I had an ache in my chest both my arms were sore, everything felt bruised."

Rosie O'Donnell Recovering After Heart Attack Watch Video

Two-thirds of women and one-third of doctors don't recognize the symptoms of heart attack in females, McNicholas said.

"These symptoms are often more subtle than the classic 'elephant sitting on your chest,'" she said. "The universal sign of a heart attack, clutching your chest, often doesn't apply to women."

O'Donnell likely had ischemia, or a "heart cramp," McNicholas said. "We can get through heart cramps, but she could have gone on to total occlusion," or obstruction.

But she gives the comedian a pat on the back for taking aspirin, a move that might have saved her life.

McNicholas, 64, knows all too well how hesitant women are to believe they are having a heart attack. She had one herself 10 years ago, undergoing quadruple-bypass surgery to repair blockages in her arteries.

Like O'Donnell, she delayed getting help for weeks, continuing to perform heart surgery, but feeling exhausted and carrying a "sense of dread."

"It's very typical of women," she said. "The symptoms are not quite as classic and we really don't want to believe it. We are queens of denial.

"And when you don't have a good story [the piercing elephant on the chest pain], you really don't want to go to the cardiologist and waste his time. ... You are just so tired and dragging yourself around and think you have the flu."

McNicholas said her doctor was just as bad. "I couldn't convince my cardiologist, who could have turned around and convinced me," she said

"We just suck it up."

Intel brings Medfield to Russia with the MegaFon Mint

The Intel-powered mobile machine has been slowly picking up pace this year. Now, the chip-maker has signed up a new partner in the form of Russian operator MegaFon. So, it looks like we might see another (and we must say familiar looking) network-branded Android Medfield phone in the form of the MegaFon Mint. The spec-sheet, again, poses no surprises, with the same 1.6GHz Z2460 chip 1GB of RAM, 4-inch screen and 8-megapixel camera only further enhancing the sense of deja vu. What will be unique, however, is the price, which looks set at 17,990 Rubles (about $565), available from today.

Jazeera airs video of Westerners abducted in Mali

Three Westerners abducted nearly nine months ago by Al-Qaeda in Mali have urged their governments to help free them, Al-Jazeera television reported on Tuesday, airing footage of the hostages.

The men, identified by Al-Jazeera as British-South African hostage Stephen Malcolm, Swede Johan Gustafson and Dutch national Sjaak Rijke, appeared in good health in the video which was not accompanied by audio.

The hostages were bearded, wore traditional flowing robes and their heads were covered by turbans. They were shown sitting on rugs in a desert area surrounded by armed men.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has been holding the three men hostage since abducting them in the north Mali city of Timbuktu on November 25, 2011.

Al-Jazeera said in a statement that it conducted an "exclusive interview" with the hostages who gave a detailed account of their abduction in November 2011 and urged their respective governments to step up efforts to free them.

"The captives urged their countries to engage in swift and effective negotiations with the kidnappers to bring their turmoil to an end," according to the statement.

They also said "they were taken from their hotel in Timbuktu at gunpoint into an SUV vehicle and transported to unknown whereabouts. After that they were forced into a strenuous 24-hour journey," it added.

"Later the kidnappers promised that no harm would be done to the captives who told Al-Jazeera that they have been well treated."

According to Al-Jazeera the hostages were seized by Ansar Dine, an Islamist group affiliated to AQIM, along with a German national who was killed as he resisted his abduction.

In December AQIM claimed responsibility for the abductions and released pictures of the hostages.

In April it offered to free Malcolm if London allows radical cleric Abu Qatada to choose a country for his extradition, the US monitoring service SITE reported at the time.

For more than six years, Britain has been trying to deport Abu Qatada to Jordan, where he was convicted in absentia in 1998 of involvement in attacks.

AQIM is also holding six French citizens kidnapped from Niger and Mali.

Planned Parenthood launches U.S. breast health initiative

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Planned Parenthood, a target of U.S. conservatives opposed to its abortion and birth control services, said on Monday it will use $3 million in donations to launch an initiative to fight breast cancer with expanded screenings and education.

The donations poured into Planned Parenthood earlier this year in response to a short-lived decision by breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure to cut off grant money to the women's health network.

The initiative will add to basic screenings at Planned Parenthood clinics by funding ultrasounds, biopsies and other follow-up services. One-third of the money is to help pay for more diagnostic tests.

It also will provide new educational resources for women under age 40, an outreach program for Hispanic women, and a new screening tool for the network's doctors and nurses.

About 230,000 U.S. women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, with death rates higher among younger women and Hispanics. Planned Parenthood said it provided about 750,000 breast exams in 2011.

Planned Parenthood received the $3 million influx of donations in four days earlier this year as 77,000 supporters rushed to protect the group after the Komen foundation said it would cut off nearly all of its $700,000 in annual grant money used to fund breast cancer screenings.

Komen's decision triggered an uproar among its own supporters that forced the breast cancer charity to reverse the change.

Komen insiders said later that the foundation had acted under pressure from anti-abortion activists opposed to Planned Parenthood.

"We were overwhelmed with support from people all across the country who wanted to be sure that women could still get breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood," the organization's president, Cecile Richards, said in a statement.

"We've spent the last few months developing an expanded program that plays to our strengths while addressing the biggest barriers to care."

Since the controversy, Richards said Planned Parenthood has maintained close ties with most of the local Komen affiliates with which it initially had strong relations.

"In some communities, we've actually established relationships where we really didn't have them before," she said.

The group said it has also forged new relationships with organizations including LIVESTRONG, a nonprofit group founded by champion cyclist Lance Armstrong that helps people diagnosed with cancer navigate complexities of the U.S. healthcare system.

London Eater ? London food blog and restaurant reviews and ...

I went to this restaurant nearly two months ago, it had been so long ago now, that even the menus have completely changed on their official website. Situated in St John?s Wood, One Blenheim Terrace is local for me ? it?s 10 minutes on the bus ? and it is certainly one of a tiny pool of decent restaurants in this part of town.

The Chef Patron is Ed Shaerf, who cut his teeth in very glamorous kitchens including Claridges, The Ivy and the Fat Duck. Nostalgia is apparently the theme of his solo restaurant, a homage to the good ol? days, and probably to the neighbourhood as well.

Given the new snack bars openings nearly every week, sometimes it is nice to take a break from the trendy things to ?discover? more conventional restaurants with considerably less buzz. Though I must admit, I wasn?t drawn to Ed?s revival of British retro ALC ? which lists Duck Wellington, followed by Monkish Paella ? but rather I was interested in one of Ed?s many set menu offers. Specifically the (now defunct) ?25 six course dinner menu on Tuesday. As of writing, this has been replaced with one that offers a whole lobster or large steak with chips and fizz, for the same face value.

?On ?Flipping? Wednesdays, the waiter flips a coin at the end of the meal where winning the coin toss slashes the bill in half?

No.1 ? Tuna Tartar.

Served with some kind of wasabi mayonnaise (I think) , the tiny spoonful was more of an amuse than an actual starter, but very pleasant.

No.2 ? Goats Cheese Salad.

Not much to say here really, warm goats cheese with greens. Wine by the glass are a very generous 175ml (and probably a little bit more than that). I drank a French Carignan (?6), the wild vines varietal that is coming back in vogue, a good table wine, oaky and fruity.

No.3 ? Mussels, with beer bread and a shot of beer.

This beer themed dish is when the meal became more interesting. A small pot of mussels in a creamy broth, presumably also cooked with beer, served with a brioche-like bun made with beer. The shot of beer does scream ?budget menu?, but nevertheless, the mussels were delicious and we enjoyed the creativity.

No.4 ? Lamb and potato terrine, beans and mint gravy.

Richly seasoned, it smelled like a hearty lamb stew, the crispy and toasted potato exterior, was really quite brilliant. It may appear utilitarian, but it was well seasoned, tasted correct and was delicious. I could have easily had another portion of this. Good recipe.

No.4 (alternate) ? Sirloin with beans.

The better half doesn?t eat lamb, so the chef swapped it out with a small (approx 200g) sirloin steak. Served it on the same bed of beans, mint sauce as the lamb terrine. Yeah, correctly grilled, nicely pink, can?t complain really.

No.5 ? Toasted Marshmallow with chocolate fondant

A single toasted marshmallow with a hot chocolate fondant sauce on the side. Yes, charming indeed.

No.6 ? Bakewell slice with cherry ripple ice cream

Well, I suppose it doesn?t get more classic than this. The pastry was a little dry, but I cannot say the ice cream didn?t go down well.

We paid ?69.19 for two, including two glasses of wine and service.

Some dishes seemed more like palate cleansers than actual courses. Really this is a 3 course meal with plus plus. Overall, we did feel like there was enough food to eat and I think the spirit of this menu was delightful. You?ve got to admire a chef pushing the boundaries, especially someone who has chosen to explore to the very extremes of rock bottom pricing.

It did feel like Ed has had to cut some corners to make this practical, which is to be expected. Nothing really stood out as being fresh. Having said that, I think Ed made the best of the ?self inflicted? compromise. It was creative and the cooking ? where it matters the most ? was good. For us, it was an enjoyable midweek meal, at unbeatable prices. If this is what he can do with a ?25 menu, it makes me wonder about his ALC and full priced tasters.

I suppose travelling to St Johns Wood for a lobster, chips amd a glass of bubbly (for ?25 on Tuesdays) is not quite as glamorous as queuing up at (a) B&L, but at least you don?t have to shout above the noise to be heard, and it is an alternative. OBT seems like a hardworking neighbourhood restaurant ? and while I don?t really have a feel of the general eating habits ? which I?m sure (and I hope) is supported by people who live in and around St John Wood.

I do wonder if it is really worth OBT putting up the myriad of weeknight offers, which as with all set menus, are a compromise in quality for the sake of pulling in human traffic. Having said that, it was a mid-week offer that had attracted me to this party, where I did enjoy the preview, and have now become curious about seeing the rest of the show. At the end of the day, I think there are delicious things to be uncovered in One Blenheim Terrace and it is worth visiting. It is far from being the coolest restaurant in town ? it doesn?t stack fried duck on top of waffles for example ? but the chef can whip up a good meal and prices seem to be as stuck in a time capsule as the restaurant d?cor. Old fashionedness as it turns out, is not such a terrible thing.

Southern Maine Home Improvements: A Guide to Estimating ...

A massive amount of time and energy is spent in the maintenance of assets ? whether home or commercial property. Whether you are building a new structure or remodeling an old one, getting personally involved despite the availability of professional assistance always pays off. In case you are someone who prefers a hands-on approach in your roofing project to ensure no substantial wastage takes place, learning how to estimate roofing materials is imperative.

Roofing Portland Maine

If you plan to add an additional layer to your existing roof, you will only have to work out an estimate for nails and shingles. However, if you are contemplating complete replacement of an old roof or building a roof for a new structure, you will have to calculate an estimate for an array of roofing materials such as drip edge, starter strips, and felt underlayment.

Portland Maine Roofing Contractors

Roofs come in scores of geometric shapes such as rectangles, triangles, squares, and trapezoids. Based on the calculations derived from the dimensions of the roof, rough estimates of the quantity requirement of each roofing material can be easily determined - Portland Maine Roofing Contractors.

How to Estimate Roofing Materials

Usually, roofing materials are available in squares. One square of roofing material will be required to cover a hundred square feet of roof, if laid out as per the instructions of the manufacturer. Roofing materials come in a slew of sizes and styles and can be fixed in different ways such as layers, space between pieces or overlap. Therefore, most manufacturers normally designate the number of pieces required to cap hundred sq. ft. of roof and refer to that as one square of material.

1. Calculate the Roof Area

To begin with, you need to find the total area of the roof. For this, you need to measure the width and length of each roof?s segment. Once you have the measurements, multiply length by width to obtain the area of each section. Now, add all the sections to obtain the total square feet. To determine the number of squares in the roof, divide the square feet by 100. Remember, roof experts measure the roof surface by 100 square feet measurements.

2. How many shingles?

Now you need to estimate the number of shingles for the roof. Usually, it takes 3 boxes of the regular 3-tab shingles to cover one square foot. You must add 10% to your ballpark figure as wastage. Further, add 15% if your roof constitutes of valleys and hips. Expect the shingles to be cut for fitting in your roof perfectly.

3. How many nails?

Each shingle needs 4 nails for fixing. Thus, you will need 320 nails per square foot of the roof. For windy areas, employ 6 nails/ 480 nails per square foot. The nail should be long enough to penetrate three-quarters of an inch into the roof. If in doubt, consult your hardware store.

4. Felt Underlayment Calculation

Also referred as tar paper, the felt underlayment is calculated on the base of one square foot of the roof. Once you have determined the total area, you should purchase the most popular tar paper roll of #15. One roll covers four squares of the roof. If the slope of your roof is more than the ratio of 4:12, use a single layer. However, if the slope?s ratio varies between 3:12 and 4:12, you should double the layers, i.e., use 2 sheets.

Are you at higher risk for prostate cancer? | Cancer Kick

(ARA) ? Prostate cancer is a growing concern in the United States as an estimated 28,170 men will die of prostate cancer in 2012, making the disease the second leading cause of cancer death in men behind lung cancer. While any man may get prostate cancer, there are certain risk factors that may place you ? or your loved one ? at increased risk. In particular, African-American men have among the highest reported prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates. It is estimated that one in five African American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Grammy(R) award-nominated musician and prostate cancer survivor Charlie Wilson and Janssen Biotech, Inc. have teamed up to raise awareness in the African-American community about prostate cancer and its disproportionate impact on African-American men.

?Prostate cancer takes a huge toll on the African-American community, and too many of us are afraid to talk about it,? says Wilson. ?I know I was before I was diagnosed. But things are different now. I?m committed to helping others become more aware of prostate cancer and the medical and support resources that are available.?

Compared with women or any other group of men, African-American men are less likely to seek care and participate in health-related activities. Dr. Stanley K. Frencher, with the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program, encourages African-American men to proactively speak with their doctors about prostate cancer. Dr. Frencher addresses three common questions about the condition.

Q. What are the risk factors for prostate cancer?

A. A man?s risk for prostate cancer increases if he:

* Is older than age 65.

* Has a father, brother or son who had prostate cancer.

* Is African-American, as this population is at higher risk than whites and Hispanics. Prostate cancer is less common in Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Alaskan Natives.

* Has had pre-cancerous prostate changes, which can be a precursor to cancer.

* Has genetic (chromosomal) abnormalities, such as a certain altered or missing gene.

Some of these factors also may increase the chance of advanced prostate cancer specifically.

Q. What is a prostate cancer screening test like? Will it hurt?

A. There are several screening tests that may help detect prostate cancer before symptoms are present, such as digital rectal exams and prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing. The American Cancer Society recommends that discussions about conducting PSA testing for African-American men begin at age 45 due to their higher risk, while most other men without a family history are advised to speak with their physicians about PSA testing starting at the age 50. A few seconds of discomfort may save a man?s life and extend the time he gets to spend with his family.

Q. What is a common misconception about a prostate cancer diagnosis?

A. Men should understand a prostate cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence. Screening is the most common method for early detection of prostate cancer in asymptomatic populations, so it is critical that men speak with their doctors about prostate cancer and get tested if they and their doctors believe it is the appropriate decision.

For more information about prostate cancer visit www.myprostatecancerroadmap.com, an online educational resource providing information specific to advanced prostate cancer and high-risk populations.

My Prostate Cancer Roadmap(R) is brought to you by Janssen Biotech, Inc. in partnership with the non-profit organization Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education Support Network.

Janssen Biotech, Inc. provided funding to Charlie Wilson and Us TOO International in support of education and support initiatives benefitting patients with prostate cancer and their families. Dr. Frencher was compensated for his time in preparing for and participating in My Prostate Cancer Roadmap and was reimbursed for related travel expenses.

Prostate Cancer Quick Facts

African-American men:

* Represent 15 percent of U.S. men who are estimated to be diagnosed with prostate cancer

* Are frequently diagnosed with a more aggressive prostate cancer and at a younger age

* Are 1.6 times more likely to develop prostate cancer compared with white men

* Are nearly 2.4 times more likely to die from the disease than men of other racial backgrounds

Exodus Continues in India: Plight of North-East People of Bangalore in Pictures

The exodus of North-East people in different parts of the country continued on Saturday, despite the repeated assurances by the Central and state governments.

Among the other cities, Bangalore has registered the highest rate of mass exodus, with reports indicating that more than 30,000 Indians from neighbouring states of North-East have fled the silicon city in the last three days, owing to the rumours of impending targeted attacks against their communities.

Slideshow: Plight of North-East People in Bangalore in Pictures

A large number of people have also left Pune and other parts of Maharashtra, which witnessed several target attacks against northeasterners in the past. Hyderabad is among one of the cities, which fails to appease the terrorised communities.? [Read: Other Target Attacks Across India]

Meanwhile, reports said that northeasterners residing in parts of Tamil Nadu were also moving out of the state. The exodus is said to be taking place in Chennai, Coimbatore and Vadodara.

The worst-affected state is Karnataka. The State and the Centre governments are now struggling to gain back trust from North-east people, saying that they are safe in the state. All efforts and assurances have proved futile, with the communities contuing to flee the city. Reports said that Bangalore police department has tightened security in several localities, which are largely occupied by people from north-eastern regions. The police are said to be patrolling the areas throughout the night.

Meanwhile, in a bid to contain the rumours from spreading, the Karnataka government has banned bulk SMS-es and MMS-es for next 15 days. The police have also arrested six people in conncetion with fanning the rumours. The officials are reportedly monitoring social networking sites, where the doctored clips and message are allegedly being circulated to instigate violence against the North-east people.

Op-Ed: Strategic planning is not just common ... - News is my Business

Author Heb? Lugo is president of Strategic Minds, LLC, a strategic planning, marketing, research, and design firm.

In our first collaboration we shared with you the importance of strategy in your business vision. Many of you enjoyed the reading, while on the other hand, one of my teammates told me, ?Heb?, I didn?t like it.?

Even though it is sometimes difficult to receive that kind of feedback, I learned at the very beginning of my career that the best clients are those who complain, so I was appreciative of the fact that he was diligent enough to share his thoughts.

We sat and discussed the article. His feedback was completely content-driven; he specifically didn?t like it because in his point of view, the content was common sense, something everyone knows and must be doing.

He expected me to present readers with the different types of strategy, and that?s what we are going to outline today. After sharing with you the importance of a well-designed strategy to achieve your business purpose and goals, it is appropriate to discuss a variety of strategies.

But first, I want to take the opportunity to share with all CEO?s, department leaders and managers two very important thoughts when dealing with strategy:

Nothing is plain simple common sense. When discussing strategy, we must see all data, thoughts and ideas thoroughly. We must go not only after trends but also anomalies. As simple as the reminder of ?you should have a business plan (corporate strategy)? seems to you, I still see multimillion-dollar businesses running without one.

Plenty of them are doing well, that?s true, and it is also true that they would be doing great with the right focus.

Feedback is a very important tool when designing and evaluating strategies. Strategic talks are not a once-a-year thing; they are more like constant never-ending talk in the corporate world.

We should inspire employees to share their insights and perspectives. An employee who works in an atmosphere of respect and leadership can provide the kind of wisdom needed for product development, process optimization, savings, positioning and innovation. We should have (internal) communications strategies implemented in our companies.

With regards to strategy; as we said before, a strategy is the collection of actions an organization embarks on to achieve a specific goal or set of goals. This strategy is born from the vision the business has set as their desired future state.

Most of the strategies in a corporation?s business plan are a result of the organization?s strategic planning process.

When reviewing our clients? strategies to have a valuable roadmap of the organization, we recommend businesses to have at least the following mix:

  1. corporate
  2. growth
  3. marketing, including competition, pricing, sales and promotions, location, product, advertising
  4. communications
  5. personnel
  6. cooperative

When we discuss strategies, by definition, there are plenty of other areas in which a business could have a designated strategy. Where it stands will vary by business, brand or product, as well as the short, medium and long-term goals of the business.

No company, brand, product, team or market is exactly the same. For that reason, we recommend that the organization?s top leaders sit with a professional and experienced strategic planner in these areas to assess their specific needs.

Strategic Minds is a strategic planning consulting firm with broad experience in the design and implementation of a variety of strategies including the mentioned above. For consultations contact us at hebe@yourstrategicmind.com.

Jon Jones finds himself in a war of words with Chael Sonnen

Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen got into a war of words on Wednesday that showed a glimpse of the future if Sonnen can find his way to another title shot.

It started with Sonnen being Sonnen on "UFC Tonight." When discussing his move up to light heavyweight to face Forrest Griffin, Sonnen says he could easily take the belt away from the champion.

With his bout with Dan Henderson just weeks away, Jones would pay no mind to what Sonnen said, right? Because it's clear this is classic Chael Shtick (trademark pending), and there is no reason for Jones to even respond.

Except:

"The things you say about me hold absolutely no weight," Jones wrote on Twitter. "You disrespected Anderson (Silva) and his country but fought like a child.

"If you're going to disrespect me out of nowhere, at least disrespect me to my face like a man. And you call me a punk, I'm more man than you'll ever be."

Though Jones' tweets have been deleted, Sonnen's responses have not been. He mentioned both Jones' recent DUI and his new deal with Nike.

Jones' response? He is just manipulating Sonnen.

As a fighter, Jones has yet to find his equal. He continues to improve with each fight, and has proven he has a hold on his division. But Jones is nowhere near Sonnen's level when it comes to trash talk. No fighter is.

If Sonnen is so far behind Jones as a mixed martial artist, why give him the satisfaction of turning and looking back? It's odd to see a fighter engage in a trash talk war with another fighter when his own fight is so close.

NASA is tracking electron beams from the sun

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? In the quest to understand how the world's weather moves around the globe, scientists have had to tease apart different kinds of atmospheric movement, such as the great jet streams that can move across a whole hemisphere versus more intricate, localized flows. Much the same must currently be done to understand the various motions at work in the great space weather system that links the sun and Earth as the sun shoots material out in all directions, creating its own version of a particle sea to fill up the solar system.

"People think of the sun as giving out light and heat," says Ruth Skoug, a space scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, N.M. "But it is also always losing particles, losing mass."

For example, the sun sends out a steady outflow of solar particles called the solar wind and additionally giant, sudden explosions of material called coronal mass ejections or CMEs erupt out into space. Skoug studies a third kind of particle flow: jets of high-energy electrons streaming from the sun known as electron strahl. Through a new five-year study of observations of the strahl, Skoug and her colleagues have researched another piece of this giant space weather puzzle around Earth.

Skoug says that each fast-moving electron is by and large constrained to move along magnetic field lines that flow out from the sun, some of which loop back to touch the sun again, others which extend out to the edges of the solar system. The charge on an electron interacts with the field lines such that each particle sticks close to the line, somewhat like a bead on an abacus -- with the added motion that the electron gyrates in circles around the field lines at the same time.

In general, the magnetic fields get weaker further away from the sun. A physical law that applies in those cases in which electrons are not pushed off course, or "scattered," demands that the electron gyrations get smaller and more stretched out along the field line. If this were the only physics at work, therefore, one would expect the strahl to become a more and more focused, pencil-thin beam when measured near Earth. This measurement is done by NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) mission, but it shows that the expected focusing doesn't quite happen.

"Wherever we look, the electron strahl is much wider than we would have expected," says Eric Christian, the NASA's deputy project scientist for ACE at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "So there must be some process that helps scatter the electrons into a wider beam."

Indeed, the strahls come in a wide variety of sizes, so Skoug and her colleagues sifted through five years worth of ACE data to see if they could find any patterns. While they spotted strahls of all widths, they did find that certain sizes showed up more frequently. They also found that strahls along open field lines, those that do not return to the sun, have different characteristics than those on closed field lines, those that do return to the sun. On the open field lines, the most common width by far is about ten times the size of the thin beam of electrons expected if there had been no extra scattering. The closed field lines, however, showed a nearly equal number of strahls at that width and at a width some four times even larger.

The strahls on the closed field lines showed an additional pattern. While the strahls might differ in width, they did not tend to differ in the total number of electrons passing by. This suggests that the different shaped strahls -- which often come from similar places on the sun -- may have been the same in composition when they left the sun, but were altered by the path they traveled and scattering they encountered along their journey.

While each piece of statistical information like this may seem slightly esoteric, together they help constrain what kinds of scattering might be at work in space.

"We don't yet know how the electrons get scattered into these different widths," says Skoug. "The electrons are so spread out that they rarely bump into each other to get pushed off course, so instead we think that electromagnetic waves add energy, and therefore speed, to the particles."

There are numerous types of these waves, however, traveling at different speeds, in different sizes and in different directions, and no one yet knows which kinds of waves might be at work. Research like this helps start the process of eliminating certain scattering options, since the correct version must, of course, cause the specific variations seen by Skoug and her colleagues.

How makers of phones and tablets are faring

Many companies including Nokia and Research in Motion have been struggling to compete with Apple and manufacturers of devices running Google's Android software. That shows in some of the earnings reports released so far for the latest quarter.

Here's a look at how makers of phones and tablet computers are doing:

? July 10: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. asks disgruntled investors at a shareholders meeting for patience as it develops new devices to rival the iPhone and Android smartphones. The company reiterates a warning that the next several quarters will be challenging. It also expects to report another operating loss in the current quarter, which ends Sept. 1, as the company cuts prices to sell its older BlackBerry models.

? July 19: Nokia Corp. says its net loss nearly quadrupled in the second quarter on sagging sales of smartphones, which fell 39 percent from a year ago to 10.2 million. The company's stock jumped, however, as sales of low-end phones buoyed revenue and shipments of the new Lumia phones, which run on Windows software and will replace the older smartphone models, were not as bad as feared. In North America, sales of the Lumia phones offset declines in traditional Symbian devices.

Google Inc., which completed its purchase of Motorola Mobility during the quarter, says it saw strengths in North America with Verizon Wireless, driven by the Razr Maxx device. But it says international sales of basic cellphones and mid-tier smartphones declined. Google reiterates that 1 million new Android devices from various phone makers are being activated each day, with more than 400 million activated worldwide.

? July 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 26 million iPhones, 28 percent more than a year ago. It also sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase and a quarterly record. But average selling prices for both products were down.

? July 25: LG Electronics reports a lower quarterly profit as its mobile phone division sank to a loss. Basic handset sales declined while expenses to promote its new smartphones went up. The company says profitability at the mobile communication business will not be too bad for the rest of the year with new high-end mobile device launches due in North America and Japan. But it stops short of guiding investors on when the company can fully turn around its mobile business

? July 27: Samsung Electronics Co. reports another record-high quarterly profit as customers flocked to Galaxy smartphones. Samsung benefited as rivals including Apple had yet to release new models. The performance in mobile phones helped offset a slowdown in other consumer electronics businesses such as televisions.

IDC reports that Samsung has extended its lead over Apple in smartphones. Samsung had a market share of 33 percent in the second quarter, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple's fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago. The drop is typical several months after the release of a new iPhone model.

? Aug. 2: Sony Corp. says revenue in its mobile division more than doubled, but that's largely because it took full ownership of Sony Mobile, once a joint venture with LM Ericsson. Had the transaction been reflected in the year-ago quarter, growth would have been about 14 percent. Sony says more people have been buying smartphones rather than the cheaper, basic phones. It's also sold more smartphones, mostly because of strong performance of Xperia S and Xperia acro HD.

? Aug. 3: Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp. reports a 58 percent drop in profit, its third consecutive quarterly decline as intensifying competition from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. hurt sales. The company had hoped to win back some of its market with the launch of "HTC One" series, which offers users a better camera and music experience. But following the huge popularity of Samsung's Galaxy handsets, the model's key U.S. carrier, AT&T, recently slashed the prices of "HTC One" by half. HTC says the U.S. will continue to be an important market, but that China "will be a key driving force for our future growth."

? Aug. 8: Research group IDC says the success of Samsung's Android phones helped Google's operating system extend its dominance in the smartphone market. There were four Android phones for every iPhone shipped in the second quarter, up from a ratio of 2.5 to 1 in the same period last year. The gains come largely at the expense of BlackBerry phones made by Research in Motion Ltd. and Symbian phones made largely by Nokia Corp. Apple's market share dropped slightly, but the company shipped more iPhones than a year ago.

? Monday: Google says it's cutting about 4,000 jobs at its Motorola Mobility cellphone business and will close or consolidate about one-third of its 90 locations. The reductions represent about 20 percent of Motorola Mobility's 20,000 employees, and 7 percent of Google's overall work force. Two-third of the job cuts will take place outside of the U.S., Google said. The job eliminations come three months after Google bought the once-dominant U.S. cellphone maker for $12.5 billion, chiefly with a view to using its large patent portfolio to bolster its legal defenses.

? Wednesday: Rating agency Standard and Poor's downgrades Nokia Corp.'s long-term corporate credit rating further into junk status amid concerns over the cellphone company's deteriorating profitability.

? Thursday: Samsung Electronics Co. begins selling the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet in the U.S., the U.K. and South Korea. It has a digital pen and a faster processor than the iPad, but has a lower screen resolution.

Lenovo Group Ltd. says smartphone shipments grew 44 percent for a market share of 11 percent. Lenovo says it sold 5 million smartphones in China in the latest quarter, passing PC sales by number of units for the first time.

Coming up:

? Sept. 27: Research In Motion Ltd.
