One of the major obstacles standing in the way of making video conferencing a front-runner in communications technology has traditionally been the lack of interconnectivity between service providers. Different companies offering different products and services have been slow in integrating technology and coming to agreements that would allow users of different services to interact with one another. But finally, that barrier is beginning to break down. According to a press release on Wednesday, Verizon and BT customers will be able to communicate with each other via Cisco Telepresence.
Verizon explains the specifics of its new setup, saying:
?Verizon and BT telepresence customers will experience the same interface and service quality they currently do, with similar scheduling, support, security and encryption. In addition, customers will have access to a directory to determine which organizations are registered and are available for intercarrier telepresence meetings, and where the sites are located.? Customers will continue to rely on their respective service providers as a single point of contact for telepresence support, assistance and billing.?
While the initiative is only the first step of many necessary to create a truly interconnected network of video conferencing and telepresence services, it shows a drive in the industry to reach these goals. Bringing telepresence to more business meetings will also show more groups of people how powerful the technology can be and what changes it can stand to make in their work. Expanding the reach of this technology is a continually important part of developing the industry.
Although individuals who may not be involved in work with Cisco systems may not experience the benefits of this new deal right away, it is our hope that this will facilitate further interaction between distinct companies.
