MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) ? An Alabama woman is under guard at a hospital after she gave birth following her arrest in the death of her 9-year-old stepdaughter, who authorities say was forced to run for three hours as punishment for lying about eating a candy bar.
Jessica Mae Hardin, 27, was transferred from the Etowah County Detention Center to a hospital on Wednesday, sheriff's office spokeswoman Natalie Barton said. Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp confirmed that Hardin had given birth hours after she was arrested. He said he didn't know whether the newborn was a boy or a girl.
Hardin and her mother-in-law, 46-year-old Joyce Hardin Garrard, were arrested and charged with murder on Wednesday in the death of Savannah Hardin.
Roger Simpson, who lives up the hill from the doublewide trailer where Savannah lived with Jessica and her father Robert Hardin, said he saw the girl running in the yard. When emergency vehicles arrived at the home hours later, he said he thought they were there for the pregnant woman.
Alabama law requires people who are arrested to be informed of the charges against them in an initial appearance within 72 hours. Barton said Jessica Hardin's hearing will likely be held once she is released from the hospital.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources has been called in to create a safety plan for Jessica's newborn, as well as the couple's 3-year-old son, Harp said.
Department spokesman Barry Spear says the older child has been placed with a relative, and the plan is for the infant to be given to the same relative when it leaves the hospital. Speak said he could not reveal with whom the children were placed.
Savannah had a bladder condition common to young girls that meant she shouldn't have chocolate because of the caffeine content, Harp said. He said there is no evidence that the condition contributed to her death.
Authorities say Savannah was forced to run in the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 17. At around 6:45 p.m. Jessica called 911, telling dispatchers Savannah was having a seizure and was unresponsive.
The girl was taken to Children's Hospital in Birmingham where she was kept on life support while Robert Hardin, a contractor with the U.S. State Department, took eight flights to return to Alabama.
"It must have been horrible," Harp said, "especially for what he saw when he got back."
Robert Hardin made the decision to pull Savannah off life support, and she died on Monday.
Her death was ruled a homicide by a state pathologist and preliminary reports show she was extremely dehydrated and had a very low sodium level ? a chemical necessary to prevent seizures and dehydration.
Harp said he may pursue capital murder charges, which carry a possible death sentence. He said his office is interviewing neighbors who had seen Savannah running and expects to have a decision on the charges in a day or two.
The district attorney said he was not aware of any defense attorneys for the two women. He said in their initial appearance they will be advised of the charges against them and offered a public defender.
Bond for Garrard and Jessica Hardin is set at $500,000 each.

Story:
There are two worlds, Earth and Crystalis.
You are a regular person, when suddenly at night you have a dream that someone is looking for you. She is a beautiful Goddess with long flowing hair, at a magnificient temple ruin.
You wake up then that very night, a mysterious man comes and tells you he has been searching for you. He says to come with him and he'll take you away. If you refuse, he threatens you.
Thus begins the journey for the reincarnations of the Goddess Selenia in which you the player will play. The players will also be the guardians of the reincarnations, and people who knew the descendents on Earth before they dissapeared. Players can also be from the rebel group, which I will go into detail about very soon. When the descendents/reincarnations go to the other world, their hair and eye color changes to a bizarre color. You wonder, what am I?
In the past:
Along time ago, the other planet used to be peaceful and loving, and pious people. They worshipped a Goddess who brought them prosperity and peace. Temples were erected as people showed their respect for the Goddess and gave offerings. There was however, a force that was powerful that wanted to abominate religion. This force was a jealous force, jealous of what the Goddess had attained.
Destroying of temples is what happened, and destroying of the main temple was what brought out the Goddess from her hiding to protect the people. In this battle however, the Goddess was not able to win and thus, she receded (ran) to the other world called planet Earth to hide herself from this power. She laid quiet, disguising herself as human and splitting herself into parts so as to be reborn again. She made a promise to herself that she would reclaim her throne once again, and that when powerful enough, would stop the massacre that had happened before then. Generation after generation, reincarnations were quietly reborn, until present day when a band of people from the other world have quietly planned to fight back. This upset has caused the Goddess to reawake and call out to her descendents.
Presently in the world Crystalis, a group of people have have decided to ban up in order to fight off the oppression they feel from the government that now rules over them. This government is the same one which abolished the temples because they seek a world without the Goddess. The group of people are rebels, which some of them will become the guardians of the descendents/reincarnations.
The government which seeks to have no religion is headed by a man who is jealous of the Goddess. He will be the antagonist.
About the Goddess: She is a generous, loving, and peaceful. She will not fight but will fight if it means so. She has a weakness for her creatures and does not wish to harm them.

Using the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Handheld, Manpack, Small Form Fit (HMS) two-channel networking radio (AN/PRC-155), General Dynamics C4 Systems recently completed the first demonstration of secure voice and data communications via the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite-communications waveform.

The demonstration used an AN/PRC-155 manpack radio running the MUOS waveform software to transmit encrypted voice through a MUOS-satellite simulator to the MUOS ground station equipment that will soon be deployed in Sicily.
MUOS is a military satellite communications system that will enable secure, mobile networked communications worldwide, in even the most-austere environments. Development of the MUOS waveform remains on track for completion in the third quarter of 2012. By year-end, the MUOS capability will be available on the AN/PRC-155 manpack radio, the first MUOS terminal that will be available to soldiers.
?As one of the demonstration participants, I was pleased to talk over the MUOS network using the PRC-155 radio as it will be equipped for soldiers. When fully deployed, the MUOS system will greatly increase much-needed tactical satellite capacity, in terms of both communications bandwidth and the numbers of users,? said Brigadier General Michael Williamson, Joint Program Executive Officer, Joint Tactical Radio System.
?This demonstration proved that the JTRS HMS PRC-155 two-channel radio is ready to provide the portable link necessary to put the power of MUOS into warfighters? hands,? said Chris Brady, vice president of Assured Communications for General Dynamics C4 Systems. ?General Dynamics developed the MUOS waveform using the PRC-155 manpack radio and it will be the first MUOS communications terminal used by soldiers. With two channels in one radio, a soldier can use one channel for line-of-sight SINCGARS and SRW waveforms, and bridge to the second channel using the MUOS satellite system for unprecedented, dedicated global communications reach.?
General Dynamics C4 Systems is the prime contractor of the JTRS HMS radio program, which includes the two-channel PRC-155 networking radio, the PRC-154 Rifleman Radio and several other small form fit networking radios. The JTRS HMS program stipulates that two qualified manufacturers compete for full-rate production contracts, enabling greater affordability for the government. My friends know more about men than someone I just meet and take the time to understand my quirky ways.? If a woman has a man in her life that does all of those things, why would she not want him as her lover?
Every relationship has the possibility of ending, be it a friendship or a romantic relationship. I think that so many women have been involved in bad relationships (I know men have too but I?m a woman and speaking from my own point of view), that it is easier to keep a guy in the friend zone.? See, if a man stays in the friend zone, a woman has the benefit of his company, his emotional support and consistent approval, without having to take the emotional risk that comes with being in a romantic relationship.

I also know people who have maintained a platonic relationship with exes; I attribute that to the previous romantic relationship being built on a friendship.
I would say to the women that have men hovering around in the friend zone that you should take some time to evaluate the real reason that you keep those ?nice guys? in the friend zone.? Maybe the nice guy is not what you want; it?s what you think you want.

Sony is developing power outlet technology that will track energy consumption. The next logical step? Charging users by how much energy they consume while charging their smartphones, laptops and other devices.

The technology uses IC chips to authenticate users of power outlets, according to a press release, determining the identity of people who plug in and whether or not they should be allowed to do so. While that advance in hardware capability could lead to better energy conservation, it could also be used to gouge digital-minded travelers and people who work out of cafes and other public places.
"Such as deployment to the waiting room or airport lounge cafes and restaurants, the station can be expected," reads a Google translation of Sony's Japanese press release.

Sony demonstrated the technology on Tuesday in Tokyo, according to IDG News. IDG News reports that Sony has not set a date for when the technology will become available, but that the company "hopes to cooperate with appliance makers, power companies, and large infrastructure developers in rolling it out."
While Sony says the authenticating power strips will utilize technology and hardware already in use elsewhere, implementing such a plan would require adding adapters to outlets if not replacing the outlets themselves. But Sony is also developing technology that could enable just one "reader" to monitor an entire household, IDG News reports.

Even the most exact construction plan lacks many details and design options. The building owner needs imagination to obtain an idea of the constructed building. Now, the 3D video glasses made by the KIT spin-off "inreal Technologies" provide a true representation in virtual reality. With the help of integrated high-resolution motion sensors, the virtual environment adapts to the natural movement of the head in real time. At the CeBIT, the young entrepreneurs will present their new product at the stand of their partner, Carl Zeiss AG (hall 15, A26).
The inreal terminal is an innovation for use in architecture. Users can "access" their future home prior to construction. The key component of the terminal is a head-mounted display, 3D video glasses with integrated high-resolution motion sensors. They measure the position and movement of the head and, thus, allow for an adaptation of virtual environment in real time. Via tablet control, design wishes, such as changes of the wall color, floor cover, or room layout, can be made immediately. The terminal is advantageous for the client and reduces the architect's working time during the planning phase.
The terminal, consisting of the 3D video glasses, controller, 3D display, and tablet, may not only be used by architects, but also for other purposes. Any environment can be "modeled" on the computer and "accessed" via the terminal. "The terminal gives the users an authentic feeling of space due to intuitive navigation," explains Moritz Luck, one of the founders of the spin-off. In the future, the technology shall be developed further for home users.
inreal Technologies was established in 2010 by the KIT students Thomas Schander, Michael Beyhs, and Moritz Luck. In cooperation with the Institute for Information Management in Engineering (IMI), the young entrepreneurs developed their ideas to maturity. For their innovative approach, they were granted a spin-off stipend under the EXIST program by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Hurricanes deliver fatal blows to wind turbines
Gone with the wind? Hurricanes could destroy the offshore wind farms the US is planning to build in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.
The US Department of Energy set a goal for the country to generate 20 per cent of its electricity from wind by 2030. One-sixth is to come from shallow offshore turbines that sit in the path of hurricanes.
Stephen Rose and colleagues from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, modelled the risk hurricanes might pose to turbines at four proposed wind farm sites. They found that nearly half of the planned turbines are likely to be destroyed over the 20-year life of the farms. Turbines shut down in high winds, but hurricane-force winds can topple them.
In 2007, Texas granted a multimillion-dollar lease for a wind farm site near Galveston, Texas. Rose found it was "the riskiest location to build a wind farm of the four locations examined".
Each wind farm may cost $175 million. "We want these risks to be known now before we start putting these wind turbines offshore," says team member Paulina Jaramillo. "We don't want any backlash when the first one goes down and it costs a lot to replace."

Shark?s skin adds forward boost
A covering of sharp scales helps propel the creatures

A shark?s birthday suit not only fits perfectly, but is very fashion forward. Tiny teethlike ridges covering sharks? skin appear to give the fish a push forward in water, a new study finds.
These ridges, or denticles, increase swimming speed and appeared to improve thrust, Harvard University researchers report in the March 1 Journal of Experimental Biology. Meanwhile, similar work with samples of Speedo fabric, designed to look like sharkskin, did not show a consistent improvement in swimming performance.
Much like how a golf ball is able to smoothly soar through the air because the dimpled surface distorts the surrounding airflow, the tiny teethlike structures found on some types of sharkskin are widely believed to reduce resistance in water. Until now, scientists weren?t aware of the added benefits these ridges provided.
?We show an additional function of the denticles,? says study coauthor George Lauder. ?For future underwater robotic devices, there?s a real opportunity to gain an increase in performance.?
Sharkskin is well adapted for moving through water at high speeds, so engineering a similar coating could be useful in making wind and water turbines run more efficiently. To do that, scientists need to understand exactly how denticles work.
To tackle the problem, Lauder hooked up specially altered pieces of sharkskin, or skin foils, to a device that generates currents and works like an underwater treadmill. These skin foils, which were made by gluing two pieces of sharkskin together so that the denticles faced outward, mimic how a fish moves in water.
Until now, scientists ?haven?t run tests on something that?s shown movement,? says Frank Fish, a biomechanics researcher at West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
The Harvard scientists found that flexible skin foils with intact denticles were able to move 12 percent faster compared with sharkskin that had been sanded smooth.
What?s more, by putting radioactive beads in the water and studying the sharkskin under a laser, Lauder and study coauthor Johannes Oeffner saw that these denticles didn?t just reduce resistance. They also appeared to distort the surrounding water to make spiral patterns that thrust the piece of skin forward.
?Sharkskin denticles seem to provide a clever boost,? says Lauder.
Also, in similar experiments using swatches of a ridged Speedo swimsuit, the researchers did not find any consistent improvements in swimming speed provided by the surface indentations. But Lauder says that the suit?s other features, like maintaining posture and keeping the swimmer?s body sleek, probably improve performance in the pool.
